Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief

What are we as Southern Baptists doing?

The scope of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief efforts has expanded to include water purification, child care, additional chain saw and recovery crews and 50 chaplains deployed to affected areas. Southern Baptist relief volunteers serving in Katrina’s aftermath number 5,000 from 33 state conventions. More than 750,000 meals have been prepared by 56 mobile kitchens. Giving to Southern Baptist relief efforts for Katrina has topped an unprecedented $2 million. The North American Mission Board will release funds to affected state Baptist conventions as they determine the needs in each state. The mission board already is funding ministry needs of disaster relief units on the field including more than $100,000 from Southern Baptist hunger funds.

Disaster Relief Training. Kentucky Baptists eager to help with relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina will have an opportunity to receive important training in coming weeks. There will be a need for volunteers in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina for months to come. The cost of training is just $15, which cover the cost of the training manual. A training session is being held in Owensboro on September 22nd. Classes are filling up quickly so if you are interested register soon.

Adopt a Church asks churches to adopt congregations whose facilities were badly damaged or destroyed by Katrina. A commitment of 12 to 24 months is requested or however long it takes for the affected church to get back on its feet. Hundreds of Southern Baptist churches were damaged or destroyed by the hurricane, according to initial estimates. Southern Baptist churches and individuals may now register online at www.namb.net to assist Katrina victims through the Adopt a Church and Houses of Hope initiatives. Announced by North American Mission Board President Robert E. (Bob) Reccord over the Labor Day weekend, the initiatives are designed to help damaged Southern Baptist churches recover and offer assistance to people displaced by the hurricane that devastated parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Blood drive. There is always a need for blood. Now the need is greater than ever. Joey & Amy Vincent Memorial Blood Drive Monday, Sept. 12, 2004, 9 am – 7 PM at Mercer Baptist Church

Host one person or a family. If it is possible for you to host a victim of Hurricane Katrina contact Robin Tabor at 338-5939. The victims will probably be unable to pay for transportation. Also, this could possibly be a commitment for up to a year with no financial reimbursement.

More information on all of these ways to help with the exception of hosting a family locally can be found on the Kentucky Baptist Convention website at www.kybaptist.org, Go to the website then click on Disaster Relief.

August – The response to our appeal for $20 for new shoes for high school students has been overwheming. To date we have received $1,141.97 which will be divided between Muhlenberg North and Muhlenberg South High Schools.

September is the month for Food Round Up, the Joey and Amy Vincent Memorial Blood Drive and Eliza Broadus Offering for State Missions. Top 5 reasons to give grocery gift cards to this year’s Food Round Up: 1. Gift cards are easy to store; 2. They’re easy to carry; 3. You can mail them directly to KBHC; 4. KBHC can buy exactly what the kids need; 5. Gift cards don’t spoil. Send your gift cards to the associational office and we will forward them on to Baptist Homes for Children for you.

October: We will be filling Christmas Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. Please don’t include any items that will break, spill, melt, or promote violence. Fill with small toys, school supplies, hard candy, hygiene items, socks, t-shirts, etc. Please be mindful of who will be receiving your gifts, they probably won’t have a microwave to pop popcorn, a way to purchase batteries for toys, or a way to play tapes, cd’s or movies. Wrap the lid separately and include a note with best wishes and a picture of you and your address. Bring to the Baptist Center during October. Also remember to include $5.00 for shipping.

From the moderator

We apologize for the delay of the September Newsletter. Because of the need to address the issue of Hurricane Relief and the Annual meeting of our Association of Baptist Churches, we have tried to include as much information pertinent to those needs as possible. Some of the standard information has been deleted to make room for Disaster Relief information. Next month we hope to include an article introducing you to our new Director of Missions, Ray Gilliland.

God Bless,

Kevin Burden
